QUARTERLY UPDATE: HOW NEWTV HAS DEALT WITH THE PANDEMIC

It’s been almost three months since NewTV has closed to the public, and though we haven’t been able to see our members and visitors as we usually do, our work still continues.

Currently, we’re happy to say that in the month of June we have been able implement curbside checkout and drop-off for rental equipment. Members of NewTV can reserve equipment by emailing brianh@newtv.org and kathleeng@newtv.org. NewTV staff will ensure that returned equipment is sanitary before it becomes available for checkout again.

Here’s an overview of everything we’ve been doing during the spring:

Online Tutorials

Since NewTV has closed to the public, we’ve started producing online tutorials. Our Director of Member Services Brian Hebert has been hard at work creating lessons on topics like camera basics and Adobe Premiere.

You can access all these lessons here. We hope that they’ve been engaging and informing during this time and that perhaps they’ve inspired you to keep being creative at home.

Government Coverage

Like so many of us, Newton’s City Council and School Committee have moved their meetings to Zoom. Our Government Channel has kept covering meetings throughout this transition.

There were also some special City events that continued with social distancing enforced. Our Government Channel recently filmed the City's Memorial Day Ceremony and Pride Flag Raising. They also collaborated with the Mayor’s Office to stream the 46th Annual Theodore D. Mann Mayor's Community Breakfast, which took place over Zoom this year.

The Government Channel and Newton News both have worked with the Mayor’s Office to communicate with the Newton public about the COVID-19 pandemic. On March 18, Mayor Fuller, the Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital Rochelle Walensky, and City of Newton Emergency Management Director Bruce Proia answered questions live during a one-hour call-in program on NewTV
The Government Channel also filmed a PSA about social distancing with Mayor Fuller and Commissioner of Health & Human Services Deborah Youngblood.

At Home in Newton

One of the other ways we’ve been able to connect with the Newton community during this time is through our “At Home in Newton” series. We’ve been accepting video submissions from Newton residents to show how they’ve been occupying their time during social distancing.

Our first episode was produced from submissions by the NewTV staff. Some of the video submissions we have seen since then include an indoor basketball tournament, a walk through in Upper Falls, and more scenes from around Newton. Watch the episodes and submit here

Newton's Graduates

NewTV is also doing its part to celebrate the graduates of 2020. We filmed last weekend’s Celebration Lanes at Newton North and Newton South. This week, we’re broadcasting both schools’ graduation ceremonies on our Education Channel.

Newton News has also been celebrating Newton graduates with its Newton’s Class of 2020 segment. Each week, graduates from Newton are highlighted on the News with their accomplishments and plans for the future.

Hometown Media Awards:
NewTV Wins in the Overall Excellence Category

NewTV is delighted to say that we won the Overall Excellence Award in our budget category for the Hometown Media AwardsThe Hometown Media Awards are organized by the Alliance for Community Media (ACM), and they honor the best in community media across the whole US. Thank you to the ACM for this award, and congrats to the other winners as well!
