QUARTERLY UPDATE: NEWTV AND A SUMMER OF NEW BEGINNINGS
This summer, we're very happy to have been able to open our doors to members once again.
Starting on July 6, we reopened for limited hours for editing and studio use. Since then, members have been allowed to reserve the editing suites on Monday through Friday, 1:00pm to 5:00pm and the studio on Monday through Thursday, 5:00pm to 9:00pm.
We're continuing with those hours for September, and we can't wait to continue to work with members, whether it's in-person at NewTV or virtually. Here's everything else that's been happening at NewTV over this past summer.

Newton News: Interning during a Pandemic
Every semester, Newton News welcomes interns who help produce the news every week. These interns work on every aspect of the News from research to editing to being on-camera.
This past summer, Newton News internships worked a little differently because of the pandemic. There was less time in the NewTV office and more time editing from home or working out in the field. Still, these interns did a fantastic job covering the most important stories and events in Newton over the summer, while also developing their reporting skills.

Summer of Meetings
There have been a lot of municipal meetings this summer, and our Government Channel has been there every step of the way to broadcast them. In the first weeks of summer alone, they broadcasted over 67 hours of City meetings.
August saw an increase in the amount of School Committee meetings as the Committee discussed and voted on school reopening plans for the fall. They ultimately voted for a hybrid plan with parents deciding if their children will receive some in-person schooling or stick to fully remote learning. The elementary schools will start with this plan while the middle schools will start with remote learning and may transition to some in-person schooling as the fall progresses. The high schools are expected to remain remote for the foreseeable future.
Also in August, the Government Channel, in collaboration with the League of Women Voters, produced a virtual candidate forum for the candidates for the Massachusetts House of Representatives' 10th Middlesex District. Rep. John Lawn and his challenger Newton City Councilor Alison Leary participated. Lawn won the Sept. 1 Primary. Watch the forum here. |

Producers in the Studio and on Zoom
NewTV's studio has been available for limited hours since July 6. It has been great to see members getting back into the groove of things and back at NewTV to film their shows.
It's also been great to see members continue to innovate and get creative with Zoom. Through Zoom, our members have been able to produce shows with guests from across the country and even the globe. Even if you haven't been able to travel this past summer, it's not too late to transport yourself with our shows. See an interview with guests from Sicily on
Virginia's Views and Vibes, or listen to professors from Tel Aviv University on
Innovation Showcase.

Crowdsourced Boston is a collaborative filmmaking initiative where teams across the Boston area work together to recreate a classic movie. This year, NewTV is participating with a team to help remake
Cast Away. The team has a great scene that they're currently working on with a deadline of October 15. The entire collaborative film will premiere after that sometime in late fall. We can't wait to see what the NewTV team comes up with!
