Though we've closed to the public for December, we made the most of the fall.
QUARTERLY UPDATE: MAKING OUR WAY THROUGH FALL

This December, we've closed to the public again due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in Massachusetts. This means no more editing or studio time for the month of December.

We loved getting to see our members use the studio and editing suites in the fall. Our number one priority though remains the health and safety of our staff, our members, and our community. Thank you to all of our members for their understanding and flexibility.

In the meantime, we want to share everything that has been going on at NewTV in these past few months.

Celebrating Members' Work

In September, we celebrated our annual Red Carpet Awards virtually. Our annual Red Carpet Awards honor the hard work of our members from the previous year.
The Red Carpet Awards on Zoom

The Awards ceremony was originally scheduled for this past March, but due to the pandemic, NewTV made the decision to delay it. Ultimately, the awards were presented through Zoom on September 24.

It was great to have a chance to see so many of our members on one Zoom call. View the full list of winners here.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Zoom call! Our members have been so wonderful at adapting during the pandemic, and we were happy to be able to celebrate their work from 2019.

City of Newton Events + Events at the Newton Free Library

Our Government Channel has been busy as usual this fall. As Newton Public Schools have reopened, either for in-person or virtual learning, our School Committee meeting coverage has helped keep Newton residents up-to-date.

As Newton has continued to adjust to all the changes of 2020, our Government Channel has been alongside them. The Annual Veterans Day Ceremony for Newton was held outside, in a socially-distanced manner. We streamed the ceremony live online and on our cable channel. You can watch it here.
The Newton Free Library hosted two events as part of Overdue: Confronting Race and Racism in Newton, a city-wide read and series of events and conversations on race and racism.

The first event was a panel discussion on raising antiracist kids, moderated by Superintendent David A. Fleishman. The second was a talk with Richard Rothstein, author of The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America. NewTV streamed both of these events, and they are still available to watch on our website.

Welcoming New and Returning Members

We got to see a number of producers resume their shows in these past months, either through Zoom or in the studio. Our producers continued to create engaging and creative content. We'd like to also give a shout out to the members who recently helped film our Crowdsourced Boston scene! More information about the premiere of Crowdsourced Boston's Cast Away should be available soon. Photo to the left shows Tom Hank's Cast Away vs NewTV's version. The team did a great job with organizing, filming, and editing.
We also would like to extend a big welcome to one of our newest members, EveryBody Signs, who will be producing children's American Sign Language (ASL) programming! Their first two episodes will be airing soon so be sure to keep an eye out for them.
PSA with Mayor Ruthanne Fuller

NewTV worked with Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller to film this PSA for a national AARP campaign. The pandemic has been especially hard on older citizens, who may be feeling isolated during this time. This PSA highlights the small steps we can take to help them feel connected.

Congrats to Dr. Rochelle Walensky
On December 7, President-elect Joe Biden announced that Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital, would be the new head of the CDC.

NewTV was lucky to have Dr. Walensky in our studio this past March to answer questions from residents about the COVID-19 pandemic. Watch the one-hour call-in program here. Best of luck to Dr. Walensky in her new position!

Review Your Skills at Home

We want to remind all of our members that they are still able to borrow equipment from NewTV during this time. We have contactless equipment pick-up and drop-off available 1:00pm to 5:00pm, Monday through Thursday.

In the meantime, don't forget that our Director of Member Services Brian Hebert put together a series of tutorials for you to learn from earlier this year. Review the videos here and refresh your skills. If you have any questions or ideas for future tutorials, please reach out.
